Blue Planet was conceptualized in the year 2006, when owners Hilary & Iftekhar got together and talked about starting a resort. They began their search for affordable land on the islands but were priced out on most occasions thanks to the fact that recognized areas were already developed as tourist destinations.
One thing clear from the start was that whatever they constructed had to be done with the use of sustainable materials. Iftekhar is a building contractor by profession and post tsunami had the rare privilege of working with Mike Reynolds, an American architect whose innovative building projects use waste materials such as bottles and tyres. As luck would have it, the duo soon stumbled onto Long Island and found the perfect spot for their project which had the most magnificent ancient padauk tree (the Andaman State Tree) bang in the centre. Well connected to & from Port Blair, Havelock, Neil Island and with daily boats to Yeratta on North Andaman, this 8km x 2km island boasts of a spectacular beach at Lalaji Bay, sandy beaches all along its western coast and an unspoiled village with a bazaar to top it off.
The Tree House Restaurant floor was laid using traditional mud based material. 'Blue Planet Scuba' now offer safe filtered drinking water free of charge to reduce the use of bottles - and the bottles that remain are re used in building projects - in tune with their original vision of working in harmony with nature and with the local community.
Accommodation options are available at the Tree Houses & at the cottages in the Jungle Camp. Just a quick heads up - Alcohol is not available on the island so do stock up beforehand if that is a priority.
