This is small non- profit organization in the Indian Himalaya, providing Ski Equipment & instruction to the Zanskari people. Way back in 1995, 4 young British geologists were navigating through the Zanskar valley on a research expedition. On their way across they noticed how the local folks were desperately trying to reach them wading through deep deep snow and when they were eventually close enough - they asked, with anxious faces, if these geologists could deliver letters to their loved ones in neighbouring villages. This triggered off a sudden realization in Ben Stephenson (one of the those present) and Amin Zanskari (outdoor education instructor) of how skis could alleviate some of the difficulties of these locals in their everyday lives -considering how deep the snow is. After observing how Zanskari children made makeshift skis from pieces of hose -pipe, strapped to yak- wool and leather- soled boots - the duo decided to start this school which would provide numerous benefits to this town in terms of travel, health, education, communication & Sport. There are no ski lifts here and their ski store (Shangku Shelter, in Khangok) houses skis donated from Europe & North America. Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) provide equipment when available. You can help these kids either by a financial donation, donating existing equipment, acting as an instructor between January - April, or by Travelling to Zanskar.
Offerings: Cross Country Skiing (Nordic) & Back Country Skiing (Telemark and Alpine Touring) primarily for children in the region.
For those interested to contribute please contact the Ski School directly.
