The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) was first set up in Lander, Wyo. in 1965 by legendary mountaineer & environmentalist , Paul Petzoldt. In the words of former U.S Sen. Alan Simpson "That was Paul. Earthy, warm, wise, witty, a bear of a man with a heart as big as his body and a smile as big as both of those." Paul Petzoldt worked all his life to protect and preserve wild lands & recognized the need to teach people how they could enjoy & conserve the outdoors in a safe environment.
This leading non- profit outdoor school established more than 40 years ago boasts of more than 120,000 alumni. Currently, NOLS is set up in 14 locations around the world educating over 3000 students annually.
The 'NOLS India' base is in the mountain town of Ranikhet, Uttarakhand - a peaceful rural haven with majestic views of the Himalayas. This organization has been running self sustained wilderness expeditions in the Indian Himalayan Region for over 23 years now. Their primary objective is to impart wilderness survival & leadership skills and develop the concept of outdoor education all across the country.
